Healthcare Administration Degrees

Cost and value

Does a More Expensive Healthcare Administration Degree Graduate More Students?

A healthcare administration degree costs whatever the school charges, and the range is enormous. In-state tuition across the 368 ranked bachelor’s programs runs from $910 a year to $67,896. Every one of them prepares you for the same occupation, and the federal wage file reports one distribution for that occupation with no split by school. So the obvious question is what the extra money is buying, and the one outcome measure available at this level is the graduation rate.

Sort the programs by price, cut them into four equal groups, and the answer for most of the field is nothing at all.

Price group Programs Median tuition Average graduation rate
Cheapest quarter 92 $6,090 47%
Second quarter 92 $12,020 47.2%
Third quarter 92 $20,000 45.5%
Dearest quarter 92 $40,200 62.5%

From the cheapest quarter to the third, median tuition goes from $6,090 to $20,000. That is 3.3 times the price. The graduation rate over those same three groups moves by 1.7 points, which is nothing. A student paying $20,000 a year is, on this measure, at a school no more likely to graduate its students than one charging $6,090.

The Dearest Quarter Does Move. It Is Not the Money.

The top group breaks the pattern hard: 62.5%, a jump of 17 points. It would be easy to stop there and conclude that real money buys real outcomes. That reading is wrong, and the reason is in what the number measures.

The graduation rate here is the institution’s rate for first-time undergraduates, taken from IPEDS. It describes the school as a whole rather than the healthcare administration program, which is the level the federal figure exists at. Our methodology says this outright, and it matters most on exactly this comparison: the dearest quarter is dominated by selective private universities, and a selective university’s institutional graduation rate is substantially a description of who it admits. Students who arrive with stronger preparation and more money graduate at higher rates almost wherever they enroll.

So the honest version is narrower than the table suggests. Expensive schools have higher institutional graduation rates. Nothing here shows that their healthcare administration programs are better, or that the same student would do better at one.

What the Gap Costs

Over a four-year degree, the difference between the cheapest and dearest quartile medians is about $136,440. For comparison, BLS OEWS puts the median wage for Medical and Health Services Managers at $123,860 and the bottom tenth of the occupation at $73,390 (May 2025). The tuition gap alone is a meaningful fraction of what the job pays in a year, and it is being spent against no measurable difference in completion across three quarters of the field.

None of which means a cheap healthcare administration degree is automatically the right one. It means price is a cost to be weighed, not a quality signal to be trusted, and that a program should have to justify its premium with something you can actually check: accreditation, a delivery format that fits your working life, a graduation rate you have looked at rather than assumed.

What This Page Cannot Tell You

It cannot tell you what a given healthcare administration degree earns its graduates. BLS OEWS reports one wage distribution for Medical and Health Services Managers (SOC 11-9111) and does not break it out by institution, program or degree. Any site quoting you a salary for graduates of a named school is quoting a figure the federal record does not contain.

It also cannot tell you your own odds. These are averages over groups of roughly 92 programs, and an average is not a prediction for one person at one school. What it is good for is the question it was built to answer: whether the field’s price range corresponds to anything measurable. For most of the range, it does not.
