How to Become a Medical Practice Manager

Of the four routes into healthcare management, this is the one that does not require a master's, a license or a decade. A bachelor's degree and two years inside a practice is enough to be eligible for the field's certification, and the job is running a business rather than a department of one.

Why This Route Is Open Earlier Than the Others

Physician practices are small organizations. A four-doctor clinic does not have a finance department, an HR department and an operations department; it has a practice manager who is all three. That structural fact is why the job is reachable early: the employer needs someone competent across a wide range rather than someone with a specific senior credential, and there are far more practices than hospitals.

The contrast with hospital administration is stark and worth making explicitly. There, the senior credential is FACHE, which requires a master's degree, a current executive post and five years of management experience before you can apply. Here, the credential is CMPE, and its first pathway opens to someone with a bachelor's and 2 years of healthcare experience. Same federal occupation, very different distance to the starting line.

The trade-off is scale. A practice manager's ceiling is usually the practice, or a group of them, and the roles at the top of the pay distribution are mostly in large systems. People do move from practice management into system-level work, commonly by adding the master's later, and one advantage of starting here is doing that while already employed.

The Steps to Become a Medical Practice Manager

  1. Bachelor's degree, or work your way in. Healthcare administration, business or health services.   2. Two or more years inside a practice. Billing, patient access, scheduling or as an assistant manager. This is where the payer knowledge comes from, and payer knowledge is most of the job.
  3. Take on the manager role. Often an internal promotion, since practices tend to prefer someone who already knows their systems and patients.
  4. Add CMPE if you want the credential. Not required to hold the job. Useful for moving between employers, for larger groups, and for pay negotiation.

What the CMPE Certification Involves

ACMPE, the certification arm of MGMA, offers three eligibility pathways. The first asks for a bachelor's degree or 120 college credit hours plus 2 years of healthcare experience. The second is designed for students and early careerists still completing either of those with less than three years to go. The third takes 6 years of healthcare experience, of which 4 must be in healthcare management or a leadership role. MGMA membership is required throughout.

Certification means passing two examinations. The multiple-choice paper is 175 items with three hours and fifteen minutes to complete it, a registration fee of $167, and a scaled pass mark of 500. A scenario-based examination sits alongside it. Beyond the exams, 50 continuing education hours are required, of which 30 must come from MGMA and its affiliates and 12 of those from a live delivery format. The whole thing has to be finished within 3 years of purchasing the application.

That continuing education condition is the part worth reading twice before starting. A majority of the required hours must come from one organization, which makes the credential a commitment to MGMA's calendar and pricing as well as to the exams.
