Healthcare Administration Jobs: What the Degree Gets You Hired Into
Search for healthcare administration jobs and you meet one number: 597,080 medical and health services managers, paying a median of $123,860. That is the job the degree is named after. It is usually not the job you are hired into first, and the difference is large enough to plan around.
The Job the Degree Is Named After Is Not the First One You Get
Every ranking page on this site tells readers that manager posts are filled from everywhere, and above all by promotion from inside. This is where that sentence gets its numbers. Medical and Health Services Managers is an occupation of 597,080 jobs. The three occupations that people enter healthcare administration through hold 1,560,390 between them, which is about 2.6 times as many positions, at roughly half the pay.
The two tiers do not overlap much. The bottom tenth of manager pay is $73,390, and that is still above $51,140, the median of the best paid of the three entry occupations. So this is a step up rather than a continuum, and the step is normally taken after some years rather than at graduation.
None of that is an argument against the degree. It is an argument for knowing which of the healthcare administration jobs you are actually applying for. A graduate who expects the $123,860 figure in year one has misread the occupation, and a graduate who takes a records or practice administration post as the first rung has done the ordinary thing.

The Other Way In Is Sideways
The third route is neither the degree nor the entry desk. It is arriving from an adjacent occupation, which is how a large share of managers in this field got there: registered nurses (3,379,720 jobs, median $97,550), general and operations managers (3,503,020 jobs, median $105,770), financial managers (841,710 jobs, median $166,570).
That matters when reading any ranking, including the ones on this site. A programme's graduates are competing for manager posts with nurses who have run a unit and with general managers who have run a budget. It is one reason the degree is worth choosing on cost and completion rather than on prestige, and one reason a fellowship, which is restricted to graduates of accredited programmes, is worth the extra filter.

Five Job Titles, and They Are Not Interchangeable
The manager occupation covers several distinct jobs that hire differently. One of them, nursing home administrator, is the only one in this field you cannot legally hold without a state licence. Each has its own page with its own entry requirements:
